Manu road connects the height and enigmatic Andes of Cusco with the Manu National Reserve in Peru. It is a perfect trip to practice the Bird watching and also to make a life list, a list of all the birds.

It offers the best experience in the world, with the typical Andean “Cock of the Rock” in the cloudy forest of the Manu National Park.

1
1st Day: Cusco - Huacarpay - Huayquecha Biology station

First, we pick you up from your hotel very early in the morning. Then, we drive around 45 minutes towards Huacarpay lagoon. We head to the beautiful wetland for bird watching:

  • Bearded Mountaineer

  • Streak fronted thornbird
  • Many Colored Rush Tyrant
  • Plumbeous Rail
  • Puna Teal
  • Cinnamon Teal
  • Giant Hummingbird
  • Black Tailed Trainbearer, among others

After, we continue our journey for 2 hours drive towards Paucartambo town, although we will stop on the route. We have lunch in Paucartambo, and then we drive towards Huayquecha, during the way we stop to observe some birds like:

  • Creamy Crested Spinetail
  • Scarlet Bellied Mountain Tanager
  • Puna Tapaculo
  • Puna Thistletail
  • Golden Collared Tanager
  • Moustached Flowerpiercer
  • Line Fronted Canastero
  • Scribble Tailed Canastero

  • Rusty and yellow tanager
  • Pale Legged Warbler
  • Tree Stripe Hemispingus

Finally, we arrive at Huayquecha reserve station, where we will spend the night.

2nd Day: Huayquecha Biology station

We have breakfast early in the morning, then we drive through tunnels to observe some endemic birds like:

  • Marcapata Spinetail
  • Red and White Antpitta
  • Gray Breasted Mountain Toucan
  • Band Tailed Fruiteater
  • Barred Fruiteater
  • Hooded Mountain Tanager
  • Scarlet Bellied Mountain Tanager
  • Grass Green Tanager
  • Rufous Antpitta
  • Black Capped Hemispingus
  • Superciliares Hemispingus
  • Chestnut Bellied Mountai tanager
  • Rufous Capped Thornbill
  • Collared ( goulds) Inca
  • Violet Throated Starfrontlet

  • White Collared Jay
  • Black Faced Brush Finch
  • Red Crested Cotinga
  • Rufous Bellied Bush Tyrant, among others.

Later, we return to our lodge to have lunch. In the lodge, we will visit some bird feeders, specific hummingbirds. There, we will observe nine (09) different types of hummingbirds. In the afternoon, we drive to the highlands to observe some different birds typical of this region like:

  • Yungas Pygmy Owl
  • Andean Guan

Finally, we return to the lodge to have dinner. Afterwards, we have a night tour in search of the Nightjars.

3rd Day: Huayquecha – Cock of the Rock Lodge

We get up early to have breakfast and then we departure to Cock of the Rock Lodge. On the route we will stop a couple of time to observe different birds like:

  • Blue Banded Toucanet
  • White Banded Tyrannulet
  • Streaked Necked Flycatcher
  • Chestnut Crested Cotinga
  • Barred Becard
  • Andean Potoo
  • Black Streaked Puffbird
  • Unadorned Flycatcher
  • Slate Backed Chat Tyrant
  • Citrine Warbler
  • Blue and Black Tanager
  • Pearl treehugger
  • Montane Woodcreeper
  • Olive Backed Woodcreeper
  • Strong Billed Woodcreeper
  • Masked Trogon
  • Semi Collared Hawk

After, we stop on the route to have a box lunch, then we continue to CORL, where we will visit hummingbird feeders, also we will observe some birds like:

  • Violet Fronted Brilliant
  • Many Spotted Hummingbird
  • Speckled Hummingbird
  • Green Hermit
  • Booted Racket Tail
  • Bronzy Inca

After enjoying these activities, we return to the lodge to settle and get dinner. After dinner, we have the option to search some Owls and Nightjars.

4th Day: Cock of the Rock

After breakfast, we drive towards Rocotal for about one hour, where we will obverse different birds like:

  • Black Streaked puffbird
  • Black and Chestnut Eagle
  • Solitary Eagle
  • White Eared Solitary

After, we return to the lodge to observe multiple flock of birds like:

  • Golden Tanager
  • Orange eared tanager
  • Yellow Rumped Antwren
  • Deep blue Flowerpiercer
  • Montane Foliage Gleaner
  • Paradise Tanager
  • Slate Capped Flycatcher

Afterwards, we return to the lodge to take a shower and get ready to sleep.

5th Day: Cock of the Rock – Villa Carmen station

We have a early breakfast, then we go to Villa carmen. On the route we will stop to observe some multiple flock of birds like:

  • Two Banded Warbler
  • Peruvian Piedtail, Slaty Gnateater
  • Lemon Browed Flycatcher

After, we have a break to have the box lunch, then we go to Villa Carmen. On the route, we pass by two small villages Patria and Pilcopata. Once at Villa Carmen, we will settle and after we will walk in search of:

  • White line Antbird
  • Goeldi's Antbird
  • Yellow crowned Tyrannulet
  • Purplish Jay
  • Chestnut Fronted Macaw
  • Black Tailed Trogon
  • Magpie Tanager
  • Hoatzin

Later, we return to the lodge to have dinner. After dinner, we have the option to go in search of owls.

6th Day: Villa Carmen Station

Early breakfast in the morning, then we go towards Bamboo, where we can observe typical bamboo birds like:

  • Bamboo Antshrike
  • Goeldi's Antbird
  • Manu Antbird
  • White cheeked tody Flycatcher
  • Dusky Cheeked Foliage Gleaner
  • White line Antbird
  • Rufous Headed Woodpecker
  • Peruvian Recurve Bill
  • Dusky Headed Flatbill
  • Fiery Capped Manakin

After, we return to the lodge for a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, we walk through a mud route to continue observing birds like:

  • Scarlet Hooded Barbet
  • Black Backed Tody Flycatcher
  • Plain Softail
  • Chestnut Backed antshrike
  • Johanne’s Tody Tyrant
  • Yellow Tyrannulet
  • Blue Throated Pinpiguan

Finally, we return to the lodge to get dinner. After dinner, you can have a night walk in search of owls.

7th Day: Villa Carmen Station - Amazonia Lodge

We have an early breakfast, then we leave the lodge to observe Tinamous eaters and Amazonian Antpitta. Later, we search for some birds we haven’t seen yet like:

  • Cinnamon Throated Woodcreeper
  • Plain Xenops
  • Chestnut Eared Aracari
  • Sapphire Spangled Emerald
  • Rufous Crested Coquette

After observing, we return to the lodge to get lunch, also we pick up our stuff to go to Amazonia Lodge. We will stop on the route to observe some birds typical of the region like; Yellow billed nunbird, which is a beautiful and rare bird. Also, we will observe Fine barred piculet, Bluish Fronted jacamar. Afterwards, we arrive in Atalaya port, where we will get on the boat for 10 minutes towards Puerto Amazonia lodge. Once we arrive there, we settle in our rooms.

In Amazonia lodge garden, you can observe some hummingbirds and some different type of birds like:

  • Rufous Crested Coquette
  • Golden Tailed Sapphire
  • White Necked Jacobin
  • Gould’s Jewelfront
  • Gray Breasted Sabrewing
  • Blue tailed Emerald
  • Koepcke’s Hermit

After enjoying the birdwatching, we take a shower and get dinner. You also can go in search of owls.

8th Day: Amazonia Lodge

As any other day, we have breakfast early in the morning, then we go to the Tower on top of the hill, where we will observe a lot of different species of birds like:

  • Military Macaws
  • White Hawk
  • Spangled Cotinga
  • Red Billed Tyrannulet
  • Opal crowned Tanager
  • Fasciated Antshrike
  • Gray Antbird
  • Round Tailed Manakin
  • Carmiols Tanager

After, we return to the lodge to have lunch. In the afternoon, we walk through different paths in search of new birds like:

  • Emerald toucanet
  • White throated Toucan
  • Channel Billed Toucan
  • Hoatzin
  • Green and rufous kingfisher
  • Chestnut Capped Puffbird
  • Lineated Woodpecker
  • Little Woodpecker
  • Crimson Crested Woodpecker

Later, we return to the lodge to get dinner and get ready to go in search of Owls and some other birds like:

  • Common Pauraque
  • Long Tailed Potoo

Finally, we return to the lodge.

Accommodation in Ollantaytambo.

9th Day: Amazonia Lodge – Cusco

We wake up early to go to Collpa by boat for about 25 minutes down Madre de Dios river, where we will observe some birds like:

  • Blue Headed Macaw
  • Mealy Amazon
  • Yellow Crowned Amazon
  • Orange Cheeked Parrot
  • White eyed parakeet
  • Blue headed Parrot
  • Chestnut Fronted Macaw
  • Blue and yellow macaw flying
  • Toucans

After, we return to the lodge to get breakfast and get ready to return to Cusco. First, we get on the boat until Atalaya, then we take a private car towards Cusco city, it will take us about 7 hour drive. On the route, we have our box lunch before arriving to Cusco.

ACCOMMODATION: The lodges are located in the middle of the jungle, although they are definitely comfortable. Some of them, they even have electricity all the long because they worked with solar panels. The rooms are single and double beds with they own mosquito net (according to the region and location). But some of them, they have a share shower. Also some rooms have a dining room and a living room.
